Plastic pollution has officially made its way to one of the last great wilderness on Earth, a new study shows. Researchers spent three months this year collecting samples from ice and seawater. Seven out of eight samples collected have shown traces of microplastics, such as microfibers from clothing.
The results of the Greenpeace study also shown detectable concentrations of hazardous chemicals, which may have come from the atmosphere.
The research is part of a global campaign aiming at creating the world's biggest ocean sanctuary around Antarctica, and to protect its fragile ecosystem.
