World Oceans Day: join the fight against plastic pollution

There is one thing that connects every single living creature on earth, it is the ocean. From the oxygen we breathe to the food we eat and the water we drink, the oceans are the source of all life on our planet. Healthy oceans are critical to our survival, that's why we need to protect them from pollution, from overfishing, and from the impact of human actions such as climate change.

Every June 8th, World Oceans Day is celebrated around the World. It is a reminder for every one of us that the oceans play a crucial role in our everyday lives. This global event is an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges our oceans, the 'lungs of our planet', are facing. Everywhere, events are organized and campaigns are launched to inform and to invite the public to take action, to join special events and to learn more about ocean preservation and conservation.

Every year, World Oceans Day focuses on one main theme. This year, the focus is on the threat to the ocean caused by plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution: the (invisible) threat

Each year, 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans, with devastating effects on marine life and on the environment. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now twice the size of Texas. And with an astronomic 1 million so-called 'disposable' plastic water bottles consumed every minute of every day, experts estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

Plastic pollution costs the lives of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals per year, from sea turtles to whales to sharks. Animals get entangled in plastic wrappers and fishing nets, or swallow plastic bags that they mistake for jellyfish.

And the problem is getting bigger....

Because plastic is not biodegradable, it never actually disappears. It takes 450 years for a single plastic bottle to 'disappear' from plain sight, as it breaks down into microparticles of plastic that are invisible to the naked eye.

These microparticles of plastic end up in the stomachs of the fish we eat, hence entering our own food chain, as well as in the water we drink and the air we breathe.

This World Oceans Day, join a beach cleanup, a boat tour, a film screening or any other event you can find near you and help spread the word: it is up to every single one of us to help and protect our oceans, for a bright future and a healthy planet.

How does rOcean support World Oceans Day?

At rOcean, we are proud of taking part in a global movement and help protect our oceans. We've developed a unique water device that connects straight to your tap and cleans your water by removing 99% of microplastic and pollutants.

Our device also allows you to flavor and carbonate your water as you wish, so that you can enjoy your favorite drinks at home or on the go, without having to buy single-use plastic bottles.

With our rOcean One, you can reduce 99% of your plastic bottle consumption in just one year.

And that's not all: because we care deeply about oceans preservation, we are partnering with SECORE and donating a percentage of our proceeds to coral restoration.

To celebrate World Oceans Day, we are selling a limited edition rOcean BLUE device, delivered with a limited edition RigTig navy blue bottle. Get yours here and help us protect our oceans from plastic pollution!

We believe that, by changing our consumption habits and working together, we can truly make a change and have a positive impact on our planet.
